Supplier Ethical Data Exchange or Sedex, is a membership-based, non-profit organisation that coordinates efforts with buyers and suppliers to advance ethical and responsible business practices in international supply chains.
It was established in 2001 to promote convergence in social audit standards and monitoring procedures.
Sedex hopes to reduce the burden of auditing placed on suppliers and advance supply chain standards by sharing audit reports.
SMETA is a social auditing standard of Sedex that companies can use to evaluate their suppliers’ working conditions in labour, environment, health and safety, and business ethics.
The purpose of SMETA is to act as a central audit protocol, which is transparently understood by all users, enabling suppliers to share one audit with many customers.
Any auditor or audit company, including non-members may use SMETA.
It can also be applied to all types of employment sites irrespective of their size. These include the manufacturing and agricultural sites, and service providers.
Furthermore, Supply chains can be of any type and size. Hence, a standard SMETA protocol may need adjustments to cover specific supply chain circumstances.
